I've bow hunted the last few years and shoot a bow at 59 pounds which has the bow maxed out. I started low bc I broke my shoulder years back and have worked up to this weight which now feels easy. Time to go heavier? I know everyone says shoot a bow that's comfortable but I feel I'm outgrowing my first compound. Suggestions on where to go from here.....

Heavier bows shoot a little faster or you can maintain the arrow speed and increase weight (KE). You can work up I assume, but 59# is deadly. That is what my son killed his 5 point with last season. 59# was too much for that bull. He sure didn't go far.

first off welkcome to the forum

my first few questions are, what bow are you currently shooting? do you know your arrow weight? whats your draw length? 59# in todays bows is more than adequate to kill an elk. if your bow is a bit dated a new 60# could suit your needs there faster and smoother to draw depending on the make and model you choose. if its speed or a heavier arrow you want a 70# would be a possibility but until you shoot one over a good period of time you wont know how it will effect your shoulder. I just sold a 70# bow to a guy I work with and he had to back it down to 60#s after shooting just 4 arrows. he had a 60# bow before and wanted to upgrade to a 70#er. he basically over bowed himself. I made the jump from 70# to an 80#er. ten pounds of draw is a huge difference.im loving my 80#er but still getting used to it. if your looking for more of a speed bow there draw cycles tend to be a touch more harsh. so a 60# bow might be a better choice if you get a high performance bow.

just an FYI my wife is shooting the PSE premonition at 55# her arrows are 398grs 25 1/2" DL and shooting roughly around 270fps. my son is shooting a PSE EVO 60# last yr his bow was set at at 55#s 436gr arrow, 28"DL and getting 263FPS out of it.

I hope this helps you somewhat, you may want to get a newer bow in a 60 or 70 but be mindful of your choice. I would hate to hear your shoulder got injured and ruined your season.

Some reasons I would consider upgrading would include your level of dissatisfaction w old bow, and recent technological improvements in compound bows. Big improvements include parallel limbs for less recoil; lighter, stiffer risers; faster, smoother cams/draw; smaller grip size; more forgiving brace height, the list goes on and on. Get to a shop w a range and see how the new bows @ higher draw weights shoot for you. Don't forget you checkbook.

I have a redhead kryptik 2011 model. 28 inch draw , 29.5" arrows but frankly I'm just starting to understand all that goes into the arrow set up and surely appreciate the advice in that regard. I was shooting 125 grain heads but am still having some issues getting good flight. Whisker biscuit rest. Arrows are 340 but every time I go in I'm told I have the wrong size so I'm not trusting those choices as much as I should. I like the bow -I think bow tech makes them but I had a bad experience this year losing an animal so I'm questioning what I'm using.

im not one to knock what anybody shoots but you might want to upgrade. a 340 arrow is stiff for your current setup. even at 1 1/2" longer than your draw and a 125gr head. I shoot a 350 destroyer with a 125gr tip, 350spined arrow @ 70# 29" arrow and I have a 30" dl. poor arrow flight will also effect penetration big time. that could also have been a factor in the loss animal you mentioned.

First compound - money was more an issue then vs now which is why I'm thinking of an upgrade. Jerinmn - you're a pse guy I see - how bout some recommendations to get me headed in the right direction.

it all depends on the size of your check book

the best bow I have shot this year is the Full Throttle. wicked fast 370 FPS ibo, great draw for a speed bow, solid wall, very quite, dead in hand after the shot. but carries a cost of 1099.99

the DNA SP, the DNA came out in 2013 but after getting some complaints about the draw cycle on the DNA, PSE came out with a smooth pull version this yr. not as fast as the DNA but still put out 337-345fps ibo.

the Premonition, ( my wife owns this one) smooth draw, quite, solid wall to say the least. ive tried to pull through it and the string didn't move. really good speed, its a shorter bow, great shooter for sure. I almost bought one for myself. 336-344 fps ibo

the bows mentioned above have a shorter brace height to them. some people don't like a short BH but I shoot better with a shorter BH than I do a longer one.

if you like a longer brace the I would recommend the Source
7" brace, really smooth draw, great wall, very quite, good speed 327-335 fps IBO

all these bow are in the pro series line, PSE has main line bows as well but im not to familiar with them
