String Trimmer Cord

Can you guys give me the low down on the use of string trimmer cord? I know it's to add weight but, is it cut full length of shaft or front of center weight? Doesn't it rattle in the shaft?

I use trimmer line in my shafts

It adds weight to total arrow - 28in weighs about 40 grains

I pull the nock, slide it down to the insert, cut if off at the arrow. Replace nock

Its rattles a little when you tap on the shaft, but no elk I have shot ever knew it

Try it. Its cheap. and if you dont like like it, scrap it

I generally prefer a sisal rope/cord between that & weed trimmer cord. The sisal cord does not rattle around & you can use 6" or 2' or anything in-between. Like cnelk says I've not noticed that any noise disturbs elk at the shot it's more of a human thing. Length of cord depends on wt grain you are trying to achieve.

Something else I have wanted to try....

Go down to the hardware store and pick a a few 8/32 set screws in different lengths [1/8" - 1/4" - 1/2"]
Weight them on on a reloading scale and determine what weight to try

Screw one into the back end of your insert, making sure your broadhead threads seat.
Then glue your insert into shaft

This would be to increase your FOC using the same BH weight

The set screw idea is worth exploring. I'm at 11 FOC right now, and wouldn't mind bumping it up a little, but my arrows are already made up. Question: how to remove glued in inserts from carbon arrows?

To remove inserts the safest way is to remove the nock, slide a drill bit into the shaft [flat end toward the insert]
Be sure it slides freely.
put nock back on.

Lift arrow so drill bit is at nock end. Then whip the arrow down so the drill bit slams against insert
It may take a couple times bit it will release.

Note:
Upon release, Sometimes the insert can be hard to find

I like to do it in my shop in confined space - but it can turn into a hidden object game

Another way is to put a field point in the insert.
Slowly Heat FP with a small propane torch.
The heat will transfer to the insert and make glue release.
Be sure not to burn carbon arrow or it will be ruined.

Note:
FP and insert is hot.
Use pliers or vise grips to remove FP/insert

I made a long Allen tool buy cutting apart a Allen t wrench and glueing the two sections to an alum tube. I can spin on insert weights party easy. I use loctite.

Sniper: If you want to add even more weight, you can push two trimmer strands down a carbon shaft. In addition to the added weight, it is snug and eliminates all of the rattling noise.

no offence meant brad, wouldn't it be easier to order an insert weight kit from a archery store along with the tool to insert or remove the weight. I made my own tool but ordered the weights. they have a allen style cut out to insert the tool plus they are threaded so you can stack various weights on them. this is how I tune my target arrows if they hit a touch high or low.

the components are all gold tip, insert and weights. but I have found the weights are interchangeable with other inserts. I have to remove a little metal from the base of my inserts to get them to thread in. heres a pic of the toll I made for these. I welded a allen wrench to a tig welding rod.
the weights come in 5gr, 10gr, 20gr, 50gr, 100gr. the 5 grain weights do not except other weights but the rest do. I have found these to the best way to add foc weight and make a stiff spine softer and keep your original BH weight with out removing your insert.
