What do you like for quick energy?

Postby pointysticks » 07 28, 2013 •  [Post 1]

GU packets? Some fast performance energy gel? Some food bar?

I've been hand shaking drained before. I dug a granola bar into peanut butter and I felt revived. Been thinking of other options.

Yep! Those and nut/fruit gorp. I make a crap load (literally  ) and put it in a gallon sized zip lock in my pack. Me and the boys snack on it regularly during the hunt. It's quick and easy to make, not terribly heavy, and a good source for carbs and protein.

Probar (Art's original flavor) it is the only power bar style snack that does not make me nauseous. Has the right combo of protein, carbs and fat with a good amount of potassium. It is the size of your palm. About 370 calories per bar. It is a compacted trail mix style bar.

This year, I am also trying their core probar protein bar (brownie crisp flavor). Yummy!

The above bars keep me going the entire day in the woods: hiking, hunting and backpacking.

This year, I may also use the crank sports e-gel (mountain rush flavor) that I use for races. This is the only e-gel that does not make me nauseous. It does not have caffeine that would make me very thirsty.

Whatever snacks you take, make sure you try them before your hunt. You may not want to ever see or eat that snack ever again if you are forced to eat it for 10 days straight.

PBJ Sammy. It will jump your blood sugar up in a hurry and as lots of protein.

I keep hydrated, always sucking on the water which really helps
An apple seems always to be refreshing to me. but other snacks in my pack are mostly granoula/nut type bars and a foil type real fruit drink, maybe a mini snickers too!

I avoid processed sugars and high carb foods for the most part. If you eat dried fruit, nuts, jerky, almond butter, etc, then your blood sugar levels remain steady throughout the day and you don't need "boosts" of energy.

That said, for times of extraordinary effort I take a few GU gels. I think I had four of them on my packout last year.

In the woods, I find I lose my appetite, but ... I do try to snack, even if I know I'm forcing it.

1 cup Peanuts + 1 cup M&Ms in a zip lock. (Isn't this why they designed cargo pockets on hunting pants?) I've already made a bunch, ready for the trip.

Jerky, Clif bars, and Clif protein bars help add a little (very little) variety.

I don't know why I'm worried ... should be tagged out on a weekend hunt before the pack-in camp trip even starts, right?

Rockchucker is right ... at all times, good nutrition trumps junk food. But I find good nutrition in the backcountry tough. That which is good for you is either heavy, expensive, or well-below my refined taste.

Gels work for me. I have several different brands and use them all. Wilderness Athlete, Hammer, GU, Honey Stinger.

I'm with JGH. I don't eat when I'm hunting. End up taking my pb&honey back to camp. I carry paydays with me they work well when I eat. After my hunt I am usually starved for months. Nutritionalist at gym thinks I put my body in starvation mode. So this year I'm eating on a schedule. Granola. Payday. And what ever trips my urge is.

I'm never hungry either till it is too late. I get so shakey. Opening a meal bag is darn near impossible. I don't like getting like that.

Some guys on another site were talking about peanut butter and bacon sammies....Never tried those, but they swear by them.
I don't know how you guys don't get hungry when you're hunting. I eat like crazy in the woods. Granola, trail mix, candy bars, PBJs, anything I can get my hands on...except those milk duds that seem to be laying on all the trails - they taste like crap.

Hear yah on the milk duds, stick in your teeth. And yah stop and go, spot and stalk, climbing mountains. Appetite just disappears. My first hunt out west two years ago rifle season I lost almost 20 pds. Last year archery a lil more than 20. This year I'm on the clock every three hrs. Homemade granola, bacon, paydays.

I use Cliff bars, and if that doesn't do the trick, 1/2 a bottle of 5 hr energy

I carry trail mix, jerky, fruit leather, and slim fast or protein powder. It is really hard here in Colorado not very much to snack on in the woods. In Alaska you don't carry much for snacks because the berries are so plentiful.

A few years ago I made my own granola bars-granola, oats, nuts( peanuts, almonds, cashews, walnuts), dried cranberries, dried bananas, mini m&m's, I made a candy coating- honey, karo syrup, very strong ginseng and echinacea tea boiled until it set up in cold water. mixed it together and spread on cookie sheet. There was one big problem, it was so good, it was gone by day two and I had eaten so much I didn't want real food when I was back at camp.
