What about boots

Postby Lefty » 04 05, 2026 •  [Post 1]

Ive always been hard on footwear. Never had the high-end stuff, Across, Redwing, Danner Cabelas Rocky and hikers: Keen, New Balance .
Just trashed a pair of Danners,

I need high-tops for ankle , and leg support. and a larger toe box.. what do you guy like or would recommend. Ive been looking at spending a bit more, Lathrop's kind of spiked my interst,, however my wife isnt so fond of the pricing of quality boots

I have a bad ankle. When I was about 8 years old I got the bright idea I could jump out of the barn loft with a bed sheet for a parachute. :? Been paying for that for the remainder of my life. So good boot selection has always been a priority for me. One of the most important features I look for in a hunting boot is a good wide heel. For me, the wider the heel, the more stable my ankle seems to be. Hi price/hi tech boots are worthless to me if they don't have a good wide heel to help stabilize my ankle. Proper size, a wide heel, and something that will keep my feet reasonable dry are the three main things I look for in a hunting boot. And if you look good and hard you can find just about all of that in the El Cheapo brands as well as the hi priced ones.

I have used Schnees and am very very happy with them. I would see if I could try on some Lathrup and Schnees and see what fits better. Schnees are now available at Scheels.

Sorry Swede: I cant find as cobbler to fix my Danners. tossed them out the last garbage day.I am no longer the frugal shopper of years past

Well my argument and choice on boots ended this morning.

Maybe I was like a moth to a fire

Maybe it was my daughters comments We ( me,) need to spend more of our retirement money, at least spend our SS

Last night I returned a Sitka hoody to be fixed with a bad zipper.

This morning I went shopping at Walmart, purchasing oversized clothes hangers, Metamucil and Zink sunscreen.

Driving west thru Bozeman Montana the thought hit me,, Kenetrek is out here somewhere, a quick google maps and I was off to Kenetrek boots. I was drawn in..
I would just try boots on,, maybe purchased some 2nds online if I find something I like
Leaving my billfold in the truck,,, ,, Ill just try them on,,,
yeah

The sales fellow was friendly enough. measured my feet,
Ive always worn 14 regular, or 13 Wide except for my hockey skates, Ski boots a roller blades,, each size 15 ,, extra thick socks and laced tight

I asked what size foot I had ,, he said he would "grab a few"

I have severe neuropathy in my legs and feet ( and hands) ,,,,,,,, I slipped the boots on,, wow feels just like my 40 year old hockey skates,, I asked again what size

"15 narrow is what you need"
What? Ive always needed a larger toe box,, The sales guy stated ,,,, that was his first clue I was wearing the wrong sized boots( shoes)
I walked out,,, grabbed my billfold and paid nearly eight times as much for a pair of boot than the price of my first car,,,,,,,

Then I drove over to Stone Glacier and Simms

Just so you all know it was very easy to turn down a pair of Sitka Blizzard Pro gloves after seeing that price,,, I guess I ll stay with my 12 year old $5.00 Cabelas gloves,,,,

Buy once, cry once. I am one to never be cheap with boots. I like to be nice to my feet. I just bought some Schnee Torre a month or so ago. Wore them this morning on my walk. Wow. Felt like I had been wearing them for years.

Yes! Very important to wear a new pair of upper crust hunting boots well before you hit the elk woods. You’ll find that they’re just as comfortable as tennis shoes once you break them in, with much better ankle support, and traction.

I was told years back all leather need some break in how ever synthetics dont.
This boots are for my mountain hiking/hunting, they give great support which I need, they fit much like my hockey sand roller blades ( which I haven't used in 9 years )

I do know I need to shorten the laces

Schnees Beartooth are all leather. Maybe they used my foot for the mold. Funny, but I don't remember being paid for that.

I don't care how much or little you pay for a pair of boots. They are no bargain if they don't fit you correctly. I get 10-12 years out of a pair of USA made Danner's. They fit me right.
It does not take a mathematical genius to figure out that buying a cheap pair if ill-fitting boots is no bargain. I hope your new boots work out great for you. If you find yourself dropping them into the garbage can next winter or spring, send me a PM and I will give you the name of a boot maker that hand makes boots that fit and last.
